International Cooperation

Our Department has established long-term academic ties with a number of international research centres: Belarus, Poland, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Russia (bilateral projects with the Academies of Sciences, http://www.folklore.ee/rl/fo/koostoo/; agreements with professional academic societies and institutions in Europe and the United States have been signed. Our Eastern and Central Europe partner teams consist of leading scientists on global level (Chlopicki, Valodzina, Boganeva, Vladykina, Anastasova) who in turn have close academic connections with researchers in Finland, Balkans, Russia and Belarus. At the same time RT has equally close collaboration with Western academic societies who lend expertise upon request. The researchers have cooperated with the entrepreneurial sector, eg by order of private publishing houses, publications have been compiled for edutainment purposes. Bulgaria 2006–2023: Ekaterina Anastasova – Mare Kõiva. Dynamic boundaries in the dynamic world. Tradition, religion and modernity. The project will expand and enlarge existing contacts between the Institute for Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum, BAS. Comparative studies in the field of religion and the supernatural.

Poland 2010–2023: Wladislaw Chlopicki – Liisi Laineste. The principal aim of the cooperation is to approach the role of creativity, tradition, humor in Eastern European cultural space, addressing different genres of folklore, and describes elements of communication styles in both cultures.

Belarus 2015–2024: Tatjsiana Valodzina – Mare Kõiva. The Center for Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Researches NAS of Belarus. Joint investigations in the field of past and contemporary cultural processes, religiosity, folklore, transcultural and vernacular aspects in Belarus and Estonia. http://www.folklore.ee/rl/fo/koostoo/vv/

Lithuania, 2017–2022: Žilvitys Šaknys – Mare Kõiva, Andres Kuperjanov; Lithuanian Institute of History, Lithuanian Academy of Sciences: Main area of the joint work is religiousity, material side of religiousity, incl. the ritual year and festivities, place making and the sacred sites.

Slovenia, 2016–2023: Ingrid Slavesnik-Gradišnik, Jurji Fikfak, Saša Babič – Mare Kõiva, Piret Voolaid, Institute of Ethnology, Academy of Sciences: Joint research work on mythology, belief narratives, pareomiology, children's lore. Slovenian partners; school lore project, Folklore:EJF – special volume The Heritagization of the Isonzo Front, guest editors Jurij Fikfak, Božidar Jezernik, Traditiones, editors Mare Kõiva, Jurji Fikfak 2016.

Russia 2019–2024: Troitsky – Laineste. Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, St. Petersburg – Humour, linguo-cultural studies.

Komi Republic 2019–2024: Krasheninnikova – Mare Kõiva, Nikolay Kuznetsov. Department of Ethnology / Folklore, Komi Institute of History, Language and Literature.

Udmurt Republic 2016–2024: Vladykina, Popova, Kõiva, Anisimov. Udmurt Institute of History, Language and Literature, Russian AS – Religiosity, mythology, rituals, crises.

State Pedagogic Institute of Kozma Minin, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia: Laboratory of Roman Shizhenskii. Leader of project Roman Shizhenskii and the members of his Lab, Estonian partners: Mare Kõiva (leader), Tõnno Jonuks, Andres Kuperjanov, Reet Hiiemäe, The main objective of the project is to document and analyze the phenomena on the field of new religious movements.

Karelian Republic, 2014–2020: Irina Vinokurova – Mare Kõiva, Karelian Institute of History, Language and Literature. The main objective of the project is to documentation and comparative research on the field of folklore, ethnology, mythology and short forms.

Finland 2019–2022: Jyrki Pöysa – Mare Kõiva. East-Finland University – animal turn, old and new lore from the posthuman perspective.
