In Memoriam: George Mifsud-Chircop
George Mifsud-Chircop, Maltese folklorist, a long-time member of ISFNR, founder of the Ritual Year work group of SIEF and the organiser of the first conference, died of cancer on December 19, 2007. Members of the work group remember him as the indefatigable introducer and expert of Maltese folklore and had a rare opportunity to learn about the Maltese traditions by the mediation of George’s warm humour. Having been virtually the only professional folklorist in Malta, he was a collector, professor and scholar all at once, and an expert in linguistics and cultural history. Always involved in several major projects, eager to incorporate folkloristic education in school curricula and expand folkloristic research, his premature death abruptly ended this valuable work.
