In memoriam: Ain Sarv (Jan 5, 1948 – Sept 26, 2005)

Ain Sarv, a long-term member of folk ensemble Leegajus and introducer of Estonian folk music died on Monday, September 26, 2005. Having started out as a scholar and introducer of Estonian folk music in Sweden, Ain Sarv arrived at the study and revival of Estonian men’s songs. He is best remembered by the legendary workshops on men’s songs at the traditional folk music festivals in Viljandi. In addition to collecting and studying folklore and his activities as a photographer, Ain Sarv was also involved in teaching computer skills, design and publishing. As a lecturer at the Viljandi Culture Academy he left an indelible impression in the development of the Chair of Folk Music. He also fought for the Setu, being a member of the Council of Elders of the Seto Congress, and represented the Pakri Island at the council of islands.
