Forum: Kalevala and Kalevipoeg. Translating and Acceptance of National Epics
On September 23, the round table discussion on the theme Kalevala and Kalevipoeg. Translating and Acceptance of National Epics will be held in Tallinn Teachers’ House (Town Hall Sq. 14). The forum aims to bring together leading translators and specialists in folklore from France, Sweden, Finland and Estonia: Antoine Chalvin, Gabriel Rebourcet and Jean-Luc Moreau from France, Alex Milits from Sweden, Anu Laitila from Finland, and Ülo Valk, Marin Laak and Tiiu Jaago from Estonia. Two central themes of the event are textual and cultural shifts in translating Finno-Ugric epics, and the acceptance and role of national epics in constructing national identity.
The forum takes place during 9:00-17:30 and the audience is welcome to participate in the discussion. Free entrance and simultaneous translation are provided. The conference is organized by the French Culture Centre in Tallinn.
